Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.
  • Please upload 2 copies of your submission appropriately labelled as "blinded" and "non-blinded"

    Blinded copy:
    -Should not include any author identifiers (ie/ name, affiliations, etc.)
    -This copy will be sent to reviewers to make appropriate edits

    Non-blinded copy:
    -To include author names and affiliations in proper format (as detailed in the author guidelines).
    -A separate page, at the end of the submission, should include detailed author identifiers in the order you would like them to appear on the final submission.

    -Example:

Author Guidelines

Abstract Format Guidelines: 

                                    Title

Smith, Joseph, MD1; Young, Steven MD2

  1. Hospital Affiliation, City, State
  2. Hospital Affiliation, City, State

Abstract:

  • Brief summary of the Case Report.
  • A "one-liner" from each section: Introduction, Clinical Course, Discussion, Conclusion. 

Introduction:

  • Introduce the topic.
  • For example: History, epidemiology, statistics, etc.

Clinical Course:

  • Clinical course of the patient being presented.
  • Expand lab values or disease names initially before shortening them
    • (ie Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease -> COPD).
  • Lab values should include standardized units. 
  • Discuss the course from the patient’s admission to discharge (or up to what was relevant to the case).

Discussion:

  • Discuss the disease or topic of interest.
  • Presentation, management, treatment, etc.

Conclusion:

  • Quick sum up of what was discussed and why it was relevant.
  • Mention why your management was unique/notable, and how it can improve management in the future.

Citations/References:

  • These should be in numerical order from the Introduction to the Discussion.
  • They should not be included in the Abstract or Conclusion.
  • Citations should be in-text, and placed in square brackets (ie [1] [2]) before end punctuation.
  • They should be listed accordingly in the references respectively.
  • Citations should be made in APA format.
  • Citation example: "The SSAJM is a scholarly journal promoting research and education [1]."

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

Patients have a right to privacy that should not be infringed without informed consent. Identifying information, including patients' names, initials, or hospital numbers, should not be published in written descriptions, photographs, and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (or parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Informed consent for this purpose requires that a patient who is identifiable be shown the manuscript to be published. Authors should identify Individuals who provide writing assistance and disclose the funding source for this assistance.
